January 27, 2012 New Converse auctions off fine Waltham clock for $17255
STRAFFORD An exceedingly rare and important Waltham girandole (ornate banjo) clock, made around 1900 and with a serial number of 1, making it possibly the first of fewer than 50 made, sold for $17,255 at an auction held Dec. 28 by Gordon S. Converse amp; Co. The auction was held at the Peoples Light amp; Theater Company in Malvern, west of Philadelphia.
The Waltham timepiece was the top lot of the 400 or so items that changed hands in a sale that featured antique clocks, Asian objects, fine art, porcelain and antiques in an array of categories. The 48-inch-by-15-inch clock was made even more desirable to bidders by an unusual added thermometer in the throat. The condition of the clock...

January 27, 2012 Council Now Divided Over Beach Horseback Rides
OCEAN CITY Last week the Mayor and City Council pushed forward in allowing horseback riding on the beach with a 6-1 vote, but this week opinions changed, resulting in a 4-3 vote to pass the ordinance in first reading, with council members Doug Cymek, Mary Knight and Lloyd Martin in opposition.
I really didnt want this to be the next 4-3 vote, Council President Jim Hall said. I am willing to try this for 90 days they are pretty to see and when you go to other resorts you do see other folks riding and splashing in the water, and for that reason I think it is worth a try. If it doesnt work out or if we have problems with it, we just stop it.
Knight expressed many public concerns...

January 26, 2012 Review of KAWS at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
KAWS was born Brian Donnelly and grew up in New Jersey, where he began his art career as a graffiti artist – defacing billboards and ads with his characteristic X marks. He’s a BFA graduate of the School of Visual Arts in NYC and currently lives in Brooklyn.
I’m increasingly interested in street artists who move so fluidly between graffiti, illustration, fine art, and product design. KAWS was obviously influenced by cartoon characters – probably grew up drawing them like most boys who are artists – but has taken iconic characters like Mickey Mouse and SpongeBob to another level with his unique signature twists.
He also is one of a growing group...

January 24, 2012 Sitting it out
The conclusions about the physical condition of young people build on a survey of Norwegian schoolchildrens performance in the 3 000-metre race from 1969 to 2009.
Associate professors Leif Inge Tjelta and Sindre Dyrstad at the University of Stavanger (UiS) have drawn on notes kept by a number of physical education teachers.
Their work has confirmed a modern prejudice that todays Norwegian children run more slowly than people of their age did in the past.
Dramatic
Based on roughly 5 000 trials covering pupils in Stavanger, the results of the study are depressing and worse than the researchers had feared.
They show that physical endurance levels among schoolchildren...
