The Alpine Valley Ski Patrol is celebrating 50 years of service at Alpine Valley Ski Resort in White Lake.
The organization will be hosting a kick-off to safety week in the lodge in order to make outdoor sporting activities more pleasant.
The patrol is made up of more than 100 volunteers who help keep everyone safe while they are skiing and snowboarding.
What we do mostly is keep people safe … were like EMTs, only on the hill, said Marge Loula, secretary for the Alpine Valley Ski Patrol.
The family-friendly event will have different things for kids and parents to do in the lodge including poster making, safety videos, correct use of helmet demonstrations, learning how to call ski patrol, what to do if someone is hurt and giveaways.
Loula said that many kids think they know what they are doing when they ski and snowboard, but in reality, they dont know the safest and proper techniques putting them at risk for injuries.
The patrol has many members on the team who have been involved for 30 or 40 years.
In order to become a part of the team, you have to be confident in your skiing and snowboarding abilities, have time to dedicate, be over the age of 18 and pass a three-year training course, Loula said.
FYI
The kick-off event for skiing and snowboarding area safety month at Alpine Valley Resort in White Lake is 1 to 4 pm Saturday, Jan. 28. Those interested in joining the patrol can visit alpinevalleyskipatrol.org.
